An Architectural Marvel
Constructed during the 9th century by King Chand of the Nikumbha dynasty, Chand Baori is an incredible feat of engineering. The stepwell is approximately 13 stories deep and descends around 100 feet, with 3,500 perfectly symmetrical narrow steps arranged in a precise, crisscross pattern. The design was intended to make it easier for villagers to access water in an arid region where water was scarce.
The Purpose of Chand Baori
Stepwells like Chand Baori were essential in ancient India, especially in Rajasthan’s desert regions, to collect and store water. The deep structure kept the water cool, even in the scorching summer heat, making it a vital resource for the local community. Besides its practical purpose, Chand Baori also served as a gathering place for locals, offering a cool retreat from the heat, and was often used for social and religious gatherings.
